I like mustard probably more than your average person. A big dollop of wholegrain goes in my mash potatoes, English mustard is the (now not so) secret ingredient in my béchamel sauce and is the reason my friends love my lasagne so much, and being a true Dutch girl at heart, I’m of the opinion that you can dip anything fried into Dijon.
So imagine my delight when I heard that the King of all mustards, posh French brand Maille, was opening their first boutique outside of France? A WHOLE shop dedicated to mustard! I headed down to the launch to satisfy all my mustard desires.
The venue they’ve chosen for this London flagship is a stunning boutique on the corner of Piccadilly Arcade opposite the glorious Royal Academy of Arts. I must admit, beyond the mustard I listed above, I didn’t realise quite how extensive the possibilities were. How wrong I was! Maille has 266 years of experience in its history and it was certainly evident as I wondered round the gorgeous boutique with a glass of Laurent Perrier in one hand wondering where to start.
My friend and I decided the “mustard pump” was probably a good place to begin. The pumps work on the same principle as beer taps in pubs, but instead of larger, expect treats such as Chablis and Black Truffle mustard (!!!) to emerge from the golden spouts. This quickly became our favourite of the night. So rich and delicious, I was happily munching it on bread as if it were pate.
If truffles aren’t your thing however, you can try from so SO many other options including blackcurrant mustard, coconut mustard, honey and balsamic mustard (another favourite), blue cheese and white wine mustard, gingerbread and chestnut, dill and lime, pesto and rocket… the list goes on.
While the range on offer may be a little overwhelming initially, fear not, head upstairs, and they have all the samples available for you to try with the guidance of helpful and knowledgeable staff.
Packaged beautifully, these mustards (and flavoured vinegars, dressings and pickles) make perfect gifts for discerning foodies. Phew! Just in time for Christmas. Get down and have a look (taste) yourself.
