On the 19th July, newly opened private members’ club LIBRARY hosted a special live performance from Sebastien Tellier to celebrate the release of his 5th studio album, L’Aventura. Despite being one of 2014’s warmest (read: sweatiest) evenings so far, guests packed in to the venue to watch Sebastien’s acoustic rendition of the new album alongside DJ performances courtesy of Because Music and Electric Lady.
L’Aventura is a concept album: a hypothetical reimagining of Tellier’s childhood set in a part-mythical Brazil. Never one to shy away from exploring big ideas, Sebastien explains, “My job as an artist and singer is to run away from reality. You cannot change the present or the future, so if you want to change reality, change the past.”
Sung mostly in French, but with the occasional English and Italian phrases, each sweeping Brazilian arrangement seems to transcend linguistic barriers. Tellier admits that L’Aventura represents a new benchmark in his ambition to marry “complex chords and complex melodies. But without the intellectual or boring side. Brazilian music is perfect as it’s full of mysterious chords and strange melodies, but also light & sunny. I feel my previous albums were just tests to reach this point.”
Over the years, Tellier has carved out a diverse and esoteric path, from working with Daft Punk, Air and Sofia Copolla, to appearing on stage on a golf-cart representing France in 2008’s Eurovision Song Contest.
L’Aventura was released by Because Music UK on Monday July 14th.
