Inspired by the swinging, hedonistic atmosphere of the one American city that overcame the Great Depression, this is not another vintage dress up party. Lying virtually untouched since its foundation in 1901 sits the recently rediscovered Peckham Liberal Club. Kansas Smitty’s is taking it over and breathing life into the turn of the century venue with The Kansas Smitty’s House Band, formed of some of the best young jazz men and women currently residing in this country, playing original material and new arrangements of rare and long forgotten tracks in a way that hasn’t been seen or heard in any music hall for a very long time.
The band recently sold out a string of shows at the Servants Jazz Quarters and a stellar headline show at Dalston’s Vortex Jazz Bar in Dalston and secret London warehouse after parties, so expect a good old – fashioned roadblock on the night.
And this isn’t all that is in store. The Smitty’s Julep Bar hosted by the infamous Stav B (“a creative force to be reckoned with – timeout”) smashing out nothing but the best Juleps this side of Kentucky all night long – just Bourbon, mint, crushed ice and a special bitters of her own concoction.
Feeling peckish? Out the back of the music hall The Tamale Shack will be cooking up a storm for hungry dancers. They will be serving up piping hot Tamales – which for those that don’t know are a deep south delicacy of slow cooked pork cooked to Smitty’s own recipeand steamed in a dough or ‘masa’ then wrapped in a corn husk and served with a hot salsa or cool sour cream. last seen in london circa 2010 and now back with a point to prove..
When the band is not playing the Kansas Smitty’s DJ’s will be spinning the best Swing, Rhythm & Blues, Jump’n’Jive and Hard Bopping goodness to keep spirits and knees high.
