The team behind coffee haven Shot Espresso and pizza and gelato café Ice&Slice have just opened Bistrò by Shot; an elegant all-day dining concept offering a mix of healthy and indulgent treats by day and French-Italian cuisine by night. Ingredients are fresh and the menu is seasonal, using ingredients sourced predominantly from independent local suppliers.
The bistro is very much a collaboration between local businesses, with local interior design company Cue Design devising the relaxed interiors and a French local lovingly making macaroons for the patisserie. There’s a distinctly relaxed feel about the place too, with professional, knowledgeable staff who balance a knowledgable professionalism with a friendly openness. There was something refreshing about the waiter admitting it was his first time making an espresso martini. The fact that he made it perfectly only added to the charm.
The wine list is diverse and the cocktails are classic. This isn’t the place to come for radical drinking and dining. Rather, it’s wholesome and tasty food that’s executed well and more creatively-plated than you might expect considering the reasonable prices. Soy gel and avocado mousse made excellent accompaniments to the cucumber cannelloni of cornish crab, and the halibut’s hazelnut pesto topping was one of the best things we’ve tasted all year. We were keen to try the duck fat-basted chips-of-the-moment that seem to be popping up all over London, and Bistrò by Shot’s indulgent potato ‘side’ didn’t disappoint, particularly when paired with crispy pork belly. Try with one of their delicious (and somewhat healthier) side salads of lentils, pearl barley or butternut squash.
Our winner of the evening? The dessert. Indulgent puddings are their forte, and their melt-in-the-middle chocolate fondant with pistachio gelato made us giddy with excitement. Ordering a handmade truffle on the side is not compulsory but strongly recommended. At £1.50 each, you might as well get some for later.
